There have been a lot of outstanding point guards in the Patriot League, and a good number of them have worn the Orange and Blue of Bucknell. Abe Badmus, Bryan Bailey, J.R. Holden and Sekou Hamer have all been (or will be) multi-year all-league picks for the Bison.

The argument is made that current Bucknell coach Pat Flannery was the beginning of that trend. Flannery was the first recruit of former Bison coach Charlie Woollum and ran point as an undergrad in the old ECC days.

Woollum had another point guard that longtime followers of the Patriot League might remember as a pretty special player. Bill Courtney was a first-team All-Patriot selection the first two seasons the league played hoops. Courtney averaged 20 ppg as a junior and 18.3 his senior year when he led Bucknell to the conference finals (a 70-65 loss to Fordham).

Courtney went on to become a coach, most recently serving as associate head coach at George Mason, where he has been on Jim Larranaga's staff the past 9 seasons (he also spent a season with Larranaga at Bowling Green).

According to a report in Thursday's Washington Examiner: Sports, Courtney is leaving GMU to become an assistant at Providence of the Big East.

"He leaves as a very highly regarded, extremely professional and thoroughly experienced associate head coach," said GMU men's coach Jim Larranaga, a Providence alum. "Bill is headed toward stardom in this business and the next logical step was to coach in the ACC or Big East. So when Providence called for permission to speak with him, I knew it would be a great fit.

The Examiner said Courtney declined comment because the move is not yet official.

Another former Patriot League star making a move in the coaching ranks is one-time Fordham standout Jean Prioleau, who is joining Tom Crean's staff at Marquette.:

A four-year standout at Fordham from 1988 to 1992, Prioleau graduated as the fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,442 points, while his 453 assists and his 251 career steals are second best on the all-time list. He helped the 1990-91 and the 1991-92 teams to the Patriot League championship, hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer in the 1991 championship game to give the Rams an 84-81 win. With the Patriot League title, the 1992 squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament, Fordham's first appearance in the tournament since the 1970-71 season. The 1990-91 team finished the year with a 25-8 record, the second most wins in Fordham history, and advanced to the NIT where Prioleau was the team's second leading scorer with a 14.2 ppg average. Prioleau was also a member of the 1989-90 team that went 20-13 and advanced to the second round of the NIT.

Prioleau was named Second Team All-Patriot League as a junior and senior and was also named to the 1991 Patriot League All-Tournament Team. As a freshman, Prioleau was named a unanimous Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Rookie pick in 1988-89. He is best known for his buzzer-beating three-pointers, hitting three as a junior against Seton Hall, Lehigh and Holy Cross in the Patriot League championship game.

Prioleau was previously an assistant at Wichita State.
